Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 3

"There has been quite a bit of hype surrounding the new Ninetendo Wii gaming system. Some say that the Wii's ability to "democratize" gaming for people of all ages and abilities is revolutionary. Do you think this is a true technological revolution or just hype? Please defend your opinion."

As a person that actively plays more than 4 hours of games on his computer a day, and having the actual Nintendo Wii console, I can safely, and surely say that it is not a revolution but is all about the hype. Even though the system is a class A console with many hours of fun in game play and above average graphics, people just get sucked into the hype. I sadly, am one of those people. I am not saying that I regret buying one, but I do regret buying it so early in the year.

I think that hearing "A gazillion consoles of the newly released Nintendo Wii have been sold over North America" (over statement by the way) gave me an adrenaline rush to get one because it was so in demand, which again relates to the hype around the console and I forgot to realize that the price would go down eventually, plus more games would be released later in the year. But, on a whim, I still bought the console in spite of all the reasons why I shouldn't.

"damn hype."
