"The web can be considered the largest art space with the most potential to create new forms of expression. Many new media artists are exploring the possibilities of this new environment to not only share their work, but use elements such as hypertext, time, sound, and interactivity in their art. Review the different Web art projects on the following site.
Choose one and discuss:
What is this piece about? Please describe it.
Why does the artist use the web?
What are the elements of this work that are unique to web art?
What do you like/dislike about the project?"

Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 5
"Some animation purists say that computer animation, like that of Pixar, is cold and too rendered. Some modern animators believe that hand animation is dead because it is too time-consuming and labour-intensive. Compare and contrast traditional hand animation to computer animation using examples that you are familiar with. What do you prefer and why?"

Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 3
"There has been quite a bit of hype surrounding the new Ninetendo Wii gaming system. Some say that the Wii's ability to "democratize" gaming for people of all ages and abilities is revolutionary. Do you think this is a true technological revolution or just hype? Please defend your opinion."
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As a person that actively plays more than 4 hours of games on his computer a day, and having the actual Nintendo Wii console, I can safely, and surely say that it is not a revolution but is all about the hype. Even though the system is a class A console with many hours of fun in game play and above average graphics, people just get sucked into the hype. I sadly, am one of those people. I am not saying that I regret buying one, but I do regret buying it so early in the year.
I think that hearing "A gazillion consoles of the newly released Nintendo Wii have been sold over North America" (over statement by the way) gave me an adrenaline rush to get one because it was so in demand, which again relates to the hype around the console and I forgot to realize that the price would go down eventually, plus more games would be released later in the year. But, on a whim, I still bought the console in spite of all the reasons why I shouldn't.
"damn hype."

Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 2
"In the introductory seminar, we looked at Catts and Zurr's BioArt, like their 'Victimless Meat'. What are some ethical and moral concerns of this work that you can think of? What do you think about biotechnology as art?"

Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 1
"In unit 2, we've begun to explore the concept of "hybridity". The meaning of "hybridity" has changed a lot within the last decade. It is a term which originated from the field of biology referring to the breeding of two similar species. In media arts, hybridity or hybridization is the degree to which a technique or process is a product of two or more techniques or processes. Hybridity is a predominate theme in our "postmodern era" (remember seminar #1?) in which we experience an intermingling of influences, styles, and techniques in all the media we create and consume. For example, OutKast is not just a hip hop group, since it is a vibrant mix of R&B, rock, spoken word, electronica, funk, jazz, blues, poetry, and etc. Such hybrid mashups are not only seen in the music world, but in all dimensions of our contemporary lives. Just look in your backpacks. How many of you have cell phone-MP3-blender-foot massager-digital cameras? ;) For this journal entry, discuss how you experience hybridity in your daily lives."
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hybridity has become the new fad in today's media and not without a good explanation. Essentially hybrids are better than having each seperate composite by itself and can even do more if designed to. For instance Cell phones, these days cell phones are not just cell phones. They can be Memory devices, MP3 Players, Web Browsers, and personal organizers to say the least. I experience hybridity on a daily basis on the terms of dancing. Dancing for has turned not just into a hobby for me, but a lifestyle. I know it sounds really corny but I dance to my feelings of the day (I hope that makes sense). How may dancing to my feelings be hybrid you may ask?
Well firstly, we must look at the different forms of dance that are out there. There are Pop and Lock, Krump, Contemporary and other forms of dancing which in general express different types emotions and in my opinion, being able to dance (or try to dance that is) different styles is considered hybrid, so in a sense, i experience hybridity through myself.

Grade 11 Media Arts - Question 4
"As many of you who watch South Park, Japanese anime, or Family Guy will know, animations are not always for young children. Animations, just like film, come in all genres, including horror! Watch the trailers of "Blood Tea and Red String" or "The Cat with Hands" which are some very technically sophisticated - and creepy - examples of stop-motion animation. Review one trailer and discuss how the creator disrupts your expectations of animation."
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Three words describe the trailer "The Cat With Hands" and I think that mostly everyone who has watched this can agree with me. "WHAT.THE.HECK" Honestly, this is the wierdest, by far, trailer I have seen that used animation. I mean, at first it looks really "ghetto" meaning that it looked really old fashion and looked like a movie that was trying to hard to be scary but after the animation section, (which struck me as ironic because I always thought that things that look more real would scare me more than animation) I was just repeating to myself, "WHAT.THE.HECK"
I can admit that I don't have a wide view on animation. The only animation that I would watch are cartoons or anime, and this trailer was far from both. I think that with the mindset of already knowing that this trailer was "just an animation" that it would just be a regular cartoon but man, was i wrong. Although the video aspect was not as chilling as a horror flick, the animation aspect really added to the viewing experience. It actually enhanced the "what the heck" factor and really made the trailer unique.
